Camping on Skye

Campgrounds

There are several excellent campgrounds on Skye. We recommend that you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

By staying in a recognised campsite you’ll have all the facilities you need, you’ll be helping the local economy, and you’ll be protecting our environment.

Please do not park overnight in places specifically marked for no overnight parking. The rules are there for a reason.

Wild or informal camping

Please be respectful of our environment. Parking your car at the side of the road and pitching your tent is not wild camping. Nor is parking your motorhome on the verge or in a passing place. Please use recognised campsites.

If you must wild camp, please make sure that you respect our islands and our residents. Please follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code at all times.

If you’re going to need to go to the toilet outdoors, make sure you’ve got a trowel or a “poo pot”. Thank you.

Leave no trace.

Solo and mountain camping

People enjoy the great outdoors 365 days a year, but our weather can change in an hour or even less and if you do camp in remote location then please ensure you are fully prepared to expect the unexpected.

If you can, leave a message with someone to let them know where you are going, take sufficient food and water, warm and waterproof clothes and ensure your tent is fully tied down.

And please don’t forget, if you are going to need to go to the toilet outdoors, make sure you’ve got a trowel or a “poo pot”. Thank you.

Leave no trace.

Chemical toilet waste – any toilet waste

Never dump toilet waste in to streams, lochs, rivers, cattle grids, ditches, or undergrowth. Dump it only at recognised disposal points.

Do not pour toilet waste into our public toilets. Our rural location means our sewerage systems are not able to cope with vast quantities of toilet waste being poured into them at one time.

Dumping of motorhome/campervan toilet waste in public toilets leads to them being blocked and closed for considerable periods of time. This causes inconvenience to both residents and tourists alike, and additional expense to our hard pressed councils.

Only dispose of toilet waste in designated disposal points.

Leave no trace

Where ever you go, where ever you stay, leave no trace.
